6medium Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
1lbground sirloin or ground beef
½teaspoon onion salt
½teaspoongarlic powder
4tablespoons salted butter
4cupsmilk, whole or 2% is best
¼cupflour
1teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoonsalt , may need more to your taste
1 teaspoonblack pepper, may need more to your taste
2cupsgrated sharp cheddar cheese, or cheese of your choice
Instructions
Grease a 9x13 pan with spray or butter. Heat oven to 375°F.
Fry the beef in a large pan with onion salt and garlic powder until cooked thoroughly. (Fry with onion and garlic if desired.) Drain if needed and set aside in a separate bowl.
In the same pan over medium-high heat, add the butter, milk, flour, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Whisk until thickened, about 10 minutes. It will be more like a cream soup consistency.
Spread half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the pan. Top with half of the hamburger.
Pour half of the milk mixture over the hamburger and top with half of the cheese. Repeat the layers.
Cover with foil and bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 30 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender, the entire pan is bubbling, and the cheese begins to brown.
